“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
The second amendment has protected liberty by
- Allowing people to resist injustice.
- Giving independence from the state when it comes to personal defense.
- Helping people feed themselves.
Yet with each year, access to fire arms has become less effective at achieving these ends.
- Guns don’t protect us from corporate lobbying.
- Guns do little to protect us from social media companies that have been empowered to distort our perceptions of reality.
- Guns don’t protect us from depression, one of the leading causes of death among adults.
If the second amendment is going to help us protect ourselves in the modern era, it needs to be reimagined.
We need the tools to fight back, and the tools to protect ourselves.
So, what are they?
