You could start this with education and then require it in the private sector if it works. School that receive public money should NOT be accepting or denying students based on their race, ethnicity, gender, etc. You should even consider removing first and last names. You can use an ID number. Publicly funded schools should be a merit based for a vast majority of students. If intervention is need to help struggling demographics, those demographics should NOT be based in things like race or sex. Perhaps more appropriate demographics, like rural counties, socioeconomic background, or others could be addressed for a subset of students. Imagine that 75% of applicants must be merit based by law. The schools are free to reach out to students who face socioeconomic challenges or who come from areas with poorly managed schools with the other 25%. Another idea would be to limit help to a specific demographic to half the size of that demographic. If green people = 20% of the population and CANNOT get in based on merit, then the schools can force admissions of green people up to 10% of the student population. Note, some green people will likely get in based on merit, and don’t count towards that percentage.
The idea is to stop racism, sexism, etc. If you are letting people in based on these categories at the expense of others who are more qualified, that is a form of racism, sexism, etc. We must also recognize that some people need a hand up, and if schools are publicly funded, they have a role in serving all of the public, including communities that don’t have the advantages of families and money, but this shouldn’t be a race thing. There are poor white communities ravaged by poverty and terrible parents just like there are black and Latinx ones. I understand the need to break those cycles, and the need to help students that are trying to get out of those communities. We need to stop making this an issue of color and sex.
If this works in education, there should not be a need for demographic information AT ALL in the private sector. Name, race, sex, and other traits you are born with, should be removed from applications all together. People should get interviews based on their accomplishments, credentials, skill sets, education, etc.
