Anyone requiring a controlled medicine like ADHD prescriptions knows how completely inflexible the refill process is.
- My dr has to submit a new Rx every month. No writing a 3 month or 6 month Rx.
- Blue Cross Blue Shields must “preauthorize the RX every 6 months.
- If it’s a 30 day Rx I cannot get a refill prior to exactly 30 days later. This is the most frustrating part! If the 30 days fall on a day the pharmacy is closed you have to wait until the next day. The pharmacy won’t give you the meds even one day early. The mail order Rx companies are complicated because they cannot ship the medicine before day 30.
- You cannot travel with the meds in a pill container. They have to remain in their original bottle.
I propose a one time authorization based on using the meds how they are prescribed, stability, ethical behavior, etc that allows drs to approve a “prescription” passport that allows me to access my meds 48 hours ahead of the refill date. The passport would also allow the Dr to write Rx for 3 to 6 months. The passport would allow fast tract through the airlines. The criteria would be based on age, employment history, medical appropriateness, past history of use of medication.
