The concept allows voters to cast both a first-choice and a second-choice vote. This approach empowers people to vote for the candidate they truly support, rather than feeling pressured to vote for the one most likely to win just to prevent another candidate from taking office. It can help break away from the limitations of the two-party system we see today.
For example, if I wanted to vote for RFK as my first choice and Trump as my second choice, my second-choice vote would come into play if RFK were eliminated in the final count, say by Kamala and Trump. In this case, my second vote would go to Trump. This allows me to fully support my preferred candidate while ensuring my vote still counts in a meaningful way, without unintentionally helping a less-preferred candidate win.
This should be incorporated at all elections levels.
Disagree. My vote should be based on my right to vote; not manipulated to advance ideological agendas. Ban RCV. Keep voting simple, paper ballots, same day count, valid Real ID.
Manipulating votes is a totally different issue. This only gives voters more preference which is important with how big the two party system has become. The two party system does not represent the majority of Americans.
I understand your concerns about the integrity of voting, and keeping the process simple is important. However, Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) isn’t about manipulating votes; it’s about giving voters more choice and flexibility. It allows you to vote for the candidate you believe in most without worrying that your vote will be ‘wasted’ if they don’t win. This can help reduce the pressure of voting strategically, just to prevent a candidate you dislike from winning. Ultimately, the goal is to make elections more representative of voters’ true preferences.
I 100% believe in ranked choice voting. What it does more than anything is that it DISINCENTIVIZES candidates from catering to just their base. They MUST appeal to a wider array of voters and a broader part of the electorate to ensure that they are the 1st choice of the majority of voters. If not, they have the fear of not being the 2nd choice and being eliminated altogether. If we want our politicians to truly listen to us, we need a system that makes that possible. The current system incentivizes partisanship and dysfunction.
The integrity of the election is a separate matter and should be taken into consideration as well. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible.
I fully support Ranked Choice Voting. It is not a scam and it is not a manipulation of the election as others have alleged. It is neither too expensive nor too complicated to work for American voters. At the federal level, the U.S. government should provide financial incentives and open source tech to states for enacting and operating elections within their states with RCV methods. This preserves states rights to run elections according to local choice, but helps to move more states to the superior RCV processes over time.
