Proposal for Congress to use the same benefits as the Veterans

Proposal for Congressional Accountability in Veterans Affairs Act

Bill Title: Congressional Accountability in Veterans Affairs Act

Purpose: This bill aims to ensure that members of Congress and their immediate families receive healthcare, retirement, and other federally-funded benefits through the same resources as veterans, specifically the Veterans Affairs (VA) system. By aligning Congressional benefits with those of our nation’s veterans, this bill promotes a shared investment in the quality and efficiency of VA services and an increased commitment to the well-being of those who have served our country.

Key Provisions:

  1. Eligibility:
  • All current and future members of the United States Congress, including the Senate and House of Representatives, will receive healthcare, retirement, and other lifetime benefits through the VA system.
  • Immediate family members of Congress members (spouse and dependents) will also be eligible only for benefits available through the VA, excluding private and specialized Congressional health plans.
  1. Healthcare and Benefits:
  • Members of Congress will access healthcare, disability benefits, and other resources through the VA system, mirroring the services available to U.S. veterans.
  • This includes adherence to the same eligibility, wait times, and service requirements that apply to veterans, creating an equal playing field for all federal benefit recipients.
  1. Accountability and Transparency:
  • Congress will be required to publish an annual report detailing any challenges, successes, or issues encountered by members utilizing the VA system, with recommendations for improvements.
  • Public access to these reports ensures transparency and reinforces the commitment to reform and accountability within the VA.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Resource Allocation: Increased Congressional focus on allocating sufficient funds, personnel, and resources to improve the VA system and reduce backlogs, ensuring more timely care for veterans and, now, members of Congress.
  • Enhanced Understanding and Empathy: Congress will gain firsthand insight into the everyday experiences of veterans navigating the VA system. This direct experience is expected to foster more empathetic and informed policy-making in veterans’ affairs.
  • Transparency and Reform: With an annual report on VA experiences published by Congress, the public will have clear visibility into both VA successes and areas needing improvement, promoting consistent advocacy for change.

Justification: This legislation is rooted in the principle of shared accountability for those who serve the country, both in Congress and in the armed forces. Veterans have sacrificed for our nation, and it is only fair that Congressional representatives demonstrate their commitment by aligning their benefits with those of the people they represent and advocate for.

By requiring Congress to use VA resources for their own lifetime benefits, this bill strengthens the commitment to providing top-tier, accessible services to our veterans and holds Congress accountable to the quality of those services.

I would advocate for veteran benefits to be a tick higher than congressional benefits. We need to clearly acknowledge through policy that veterans sacrifice far more, and are thus more highly valued as individuals, than most if not all congresspersons.
