Pediatricians offices are restricting parent’s ability to view their children’s medical information online (starting at the age of 13 years old) through medical web portals such as MyChart (used by OptumCare and other health conglomerates). Although HIPAA law does provide very specific examples of protected information (such as sexual activity), the majority of children’s electronic medical records should be readily accessible to parents. What I’m seeing is a misinterpretation or misapplication of HIPAA which is giving medical offices overreach wherein they restrict important medical information from parents despite it not being protected by HIPAA. I would like to see a federal law that explicitly states that parents have the right to view their children’s medical records and medical chart online through the age of 18 via any given web portal that their pediatrician’s office uses for electronic medical charts. Please pass legislation to amend HIPAA to address parental rights regarding electronic medical records. Thank you.
