There is a mental illness epidemic that is connected to the homelessness, drug use, and generalized burden to the caregivers of people with chronic mental illness. Some people, although not cognitively impaired, are too mentally ill to conduct their day to day lives without support. Abandoning these people has had catastrophic results on our Communities, and its not fair or appropriate to abandon them. What if we used some of this federal land to create voluntary independent assisted living communities. There can be different levels, where those who have more needs or are near crisis can have a more supervised area and when they’re stabilized go to a less supervised but still assisted community. Where therapy is available, and reasonable jobs can be gotten so the community itself can be self sustaining. Teaching life skills. Have specialized communities, where those in the military can heal among companions. Trauma survivors can heal together.

It’s an interesting idea. At the least, it’s worth testing and trying out.
