Mandatory maternity and paternity leave

All women regardless of their financial situation who have a child should have the right to a fully paid maternity leave to care for their child. It should not be left up to the employer on whether or not they offer maternity leave as a benefit. It should be mandatory. Maternity leave should be much longer than 6-8 weeks as it unsafe to place an infant that young into a daycare. Many daycares won’t accept children until 6 months of age, and these factors add unneeded additional stress on to new mothers and fathers. Men should also be given longer paternity leave to help mothers who are recovering and to have quality bonding time with their children.
