We need to have 100% coverage for all families to get help as many times as they need and for lactation consultants to get a fair payout from insurances.
We do not just do breastfeeding but we help with bottle feeding, formula, pumping, flange fitting and so much more. This is essential to ALL new families and they should be able to see us first thing from the delivery until we are no longer needed. So many families do not get the care they need because they can’t afford it. This HAS TO BE COVERED PLEASE. If we are making families healthy again this is our babies first food! Let’s do this!!!
Yes! IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) are the highest trained lactation support and we need to be able to get credentialed by all insurance companies. Many families go without support because we cannot be credentialed since we are not MDs or NPs. MDs (unless they are also IBCLCs, which is rare) are not the highest level of lactation support for these families. We spend hours with our patients! This system has failed so many wanting to breastfeed and provide milk for their children. IBCLCs struggle to make a living because we cannot get covered by insurance, payouts are so low and they keep taking our medical codes away, and companies are not following the laws outlined by the ACA (because no one is policing it and forcing them to). We need better solutions to get coverage for families! Our health journey starts in infancy and if we can support more families in meeting their breastfeeding goals, we can put them on the road to better health immediately! I am happy to share my experience as a private practice IBCLC with anyone in this administration who is wanting to know the hardships I face as a business owner supporting these families, as well as sharing how this could help families across our country.
