Health insurance and PHI protection

Third party companies and hospitals are offshoring work and letting go of US workers for cheaper labor. The offshore employees have access to all personal health information that is on file with the hospital, doctor’s office, etc. PHI includes social security numbers, addresses, DOB, insurance information, and detailed records of patient’s medical history.

Congress should ban offshoring work for companies and hospitals when American workers can do the exact work and even better.

The companies and hospitals want cheap labor, but at what cost? Personal information that is accessible to offshore employees can lead to identity fraud while American workers are losing their jobs!

Especially with PHI, the only prohibition is contractual and not statutory - or the ability to enforce such breach on an entity outside the jurisdiction of the US for inappropriate data disclosures.

I work for a huge company that handles billing, follow up and other tasks for hospitals and they are outsourcing the work to India for the cheap labor. They have already laid off several employees. I work on Medicare claims and offshore people aren’t even able to access everything needed to do the work because they are offshore! It defeats the purpose.

I am concerned that outsourcing medical billing to foreign countries may compromise Protected Health Information (PHI) and increase the risk of scams targeting our senior citizens. Additionally, this practice takes away valuable entry-level positions from Americans who should be prioritized. Outsourcing also poses data security risks, leads to a loss of control over the billing process, creates communication barriers, and makes us dependent on external vendors

I do Medical Coding and Billing - I agree with No Offshore jobs for billing OR Insurance Companies! It’s just another reason for Insurance Companies not to pay, because of their incompetent offshore employees.

Staffing agencies are also outsourcing replacing US employees with the Philippines, they have access to all of the employee personnel information.
