There is the problem indeed. 74,608 pages : According to the Washington Examiner (April 16, 2016), there were 74,608 pages in the US Tax Code. The purpose is a shell game to pick winners and losers.
I absolutely believe we should ban the income tax, but my question is do we have to replace it with a national sales tax? We didnāt have an income tax in the beginning of our country and if our government was actually forced to be fiscally responsible would we even need it now? Our government was funded on tariffs. Is it unrealistic to think we could go back to that system?
I agree! Maybe the federal government doesnāt need it, but states will. States can receive taxes via flat sales tax only as well.
In the law there has to be a cap on how much percent allowed increase per contract and a max period, .03 - 1% and IF a surplus then the next contract the percent falls back to previous percentage. We should start at 4% and see how government handles the budget. Vote every 3 years. Max 10%.
2024 - 4%
2027 - 4.03%
2030 - 4.06%
2033 - surplus back down to 4.03% No governments can be trusted with surplus. There will always be someone who is corrupt or corruptible.
Agreed , the root problem is the private banking corporation. The Federal Reserve.
Ending this system will end the taxes. We should be using tariffs to fund the government that should be small and not loaded with all these regulatory agencies that just waste money that create more fiat printing and more taxes.
I am also ok with a small flat sales tax to help fund the needs of infrastructure.
I like this idea as well.
I disagree with this one. A sales tax impacts everyone differently. It would be more fair to modify our income tax to be the same percentage for everyone or to include a minimum income tax for everyone. (even as low as 2-3% for the lowest earners, just so they can still feel they are contributing at least something) Compare, if a family that earns 100k annually vs a family that earns 50k annually both have to pay the same sales tax, the lower earners have to bear a higher burden. While
I agree with replacing income tax. We already get taxed on everything and I would also love to limit or remove property taxes. With regards to the incoming taxes, I think an interesting experiment would be for individual taxpayers to decide on what their taxes go to (i.e. my taxes would go to science, defense, and policing whereas someone else could put taxes to welfare, foreign support, etc.). This should start out as a small percentage of incoming taxes at first and then can be increased depending on absolute needs and the success of the program. This will give individual taxpayers a chance to have a say in what the government does with the money.
No income tax. No small business taxex. Point of purchase tax for non- essentials only.
No unrealized tax such as Property tax!
Obilish the IRS!
The Fairtax is well thought out and should the law. Do away with Unconstitutional income tax. What most people donāt realize is that a Fairtax would not necessarily rise prices as most companies figure income tax into the price of the items they sell. By doing away with income tax, they can lower prices. Thereās a great book The Fairtax that explains it all. This would absolutely send our economy into the stratosphere.
Ross Perot had this idea, as did Herman Cain. A great idea, everyone pays into the system, as it should be. Certainly save significantly on IRS agents, administration and frustrations from higher taxes or lower taxes! All revenue divisions absolutely needs new simple policies.
But sales tax needs to be capped. I say 2%. That would reduce the size and scope to original intent when our constitution was started.
You should read about Fairtax.
Concur with the basic notion of closing down the IRS by instituting a Fair Tax system which taxes consumption with pre-bates for low income households, those within the poverty standards, for food, energy and shelter expenses. The IRS annual budget is about 12.3 billion dollars, not including the 80 billion allocated in the Inflation Reduction Act. Such legislation would also remove the politicization of the tax system. This is really low hanging fruit in the interest of reducing the size of government and its abuses of power, and reducing government expenses.
The main problem with sales tax is that it is regressive in nature. It disproportionately affects people who make less money, as they have to spend more or all of their money on necessities. This means that just about every dollar they spend is taxed. Meanwhile, people who are better off can put a lot of their money into a Roth IRA, or can use loopholes surrounding loans to make untaxable investments.
I often refer people to this site: Who Pays? State-by-State Data ā ITEP
It shows, on a state by state level, which tax policies are more progressive (the rich pay a higher percentage) and which are more regressive (the poor pay a higher percentage). In 35 out of 50 states, the population with the highest tax burden is the BOTTOM 20%. Even in the remaining 15, the highest tax burden generally lies in the middle class; only 1 state places the highest tax burden on the richest bracket.
If we are placing the highest tax burden on the people who can afford it the least, this negatively impacts economic mobility, and it makes it much harder to pull yourself up by the bootstraps. Replacing income taxes (which are usually progressive) by sales taxes (which are, by nature, regressive) will only serve to deepen the burden that the lower and middle class finds themselves buried under.
Additionally, the sales tax would have to be ridiculously high to make up the lost money. In 2023, the federal government collected $2.18 trillion in income taxes. The same year, there was $7.22 trillion in retail sales. To generate the same $2.18 trillion in sales tax revenue, the sales tax rate would have to be over 30%, which I would REALLY not prefer.
To make up the lost money from the income tax, the sales tax would need to be over 30%.
Implement the FairTax. It takes power away from the politicians.
I guess you never want to get ahead.
YES!!! This consumption tax with the poverty line in mind seems like a better tax overall.
Eliminate the illegal IRS and fire the 87,000 armed IRS agents hired under the pretend-ident, Bidan as well.
