A complete end to net migration!
No more immigrants , legal or legal. Its a old fashioned solution to a problem that doesnt exist anymore.
Benefits
-increased wages for all
-Housing price crisis ceases to be a crisis overnight
-Safer communities
-less “new” ideas and cultures. Bringing existing americans closer together over time instead of importing new problems.
-Public services increase in quality exponentially
Downsides
-stock market will go down as wages are no longer held down by scab workers and companies actually have to invest in native workers and compete for them.
End all legal immigration until illegal and amnesty immigration is ended and under control. A moratorium on immigration until immigration is under control and no more birthright citizenship to children born on non-US citizen in the US. No more diversity lottery. After a moratorium ends, only traditional levels allowed, not a million a year. This country is NOT a nation of immigrants. Those born in the US are not considered immigrants and their children as well, if their parents were US citizens.
You don’t mean people here on work visas, do you? Those people come here because there is an established need for their skills. We need to make sure that smart, hardworking, valuable people that contribute to society are welcomed here. There are restrictions on them, they do not take from the US, they only contribute.
I keep saying that we are not a nation of immigrants, we are a nation of citizens! Totally agree. Immigration should be a net benefit to the United States. We should continue to allow permanent residency for spouses (+minor children) of a U.S. citizen; but stricter standards for determination of a bona fide marriage. All extended family sponsorship should end. Employment-based permanent residency should be made FAR stricter, but only available to non-citizens with extraordinary talents that cannot be satisfied by the American workforce. Asylees/Refugees should not be given permanent residency. TPS should never lead to permanent residency and should be limited to two years, with a maximum two year extension. Definitely end the diversity lottery and birthright citizenship. No more permanent residency for NATO retirees and other such international agreements. No permanent residency for abuse/Trafficking victims (this is utterly abused).
That is not necessarily true, but it is the common thinking. Work visas are handed out left and right, and not because we have a need for their skills; for many of the positions, Americans could be hired. We should still have non-immigrant work visas, but they should not lead to permanent residency.
Well, it is required by law that a company show there is a lack of qualified US applicants. So that is where the common thinking comes from. Yes, they are handed out left and right if a company can’t get people to fill the space. I worked in an industry where there are lots of engineers and while the company would prefer to hire Americans because it is easier, they hired lots of foreigners. (They weren’t trying to underpay people, the place paid great and was located in a place where you could get a 3br home for less than 2 yrs of salary.) That said, on the other end I know immigrants that came over here on a work visa to be a nanny because it is very difficult to find people for that job too.
The H-1b requires a quick advert and prevailing wage determination, but by no means are they checking to see if there is any qualified American who could do the job. I’ve been part of MANY H-1b applications. There is quite a difference between the letter, spirit, and practice of the law. In a day and age when the executive branch refuses to enforce laws, can you really even say its required by law? Its just not required or else they would be enforcing it, and they are not.
