As a member of the armed forces, different military Tricare insurance options are available upon retirement.
As a family that has personally been on Tricare for the entirety of my husbands military service, we went from paying 250.00 a month for Tricare, to now only being offered a plan that is the same coverage and same plan but called “Tricare Reserve Select” and is 1,450.00 a month.
My spouse retired with 21 years of service in the Army Reserves, with many deployments. Stateside and overseas. It baffles me that upon retirement, but still working a full time civilian job as he is only 42, that the government priced us out of a benefit of retirement.
As a federal program, I wish that this would be revisited. Men and women in uniform that served a full 20 + years should not be offered a plan that cost more than most peoples mortages. (Including mine). Upon true retirement age he is then eligible for other options, but until then many are priced out of utilizing this benefit. This is a gap that needs attention.
I do not feel it should be free, but it should be affordable.
I don’t know when you all retired but when I retired in 2007 after 30 years of active duty service Medicare was primary and Tricare for life was secondary. Medicare is about $200 or so/ month . Tricare for Life is provided.
Prior to that we were promised Tricare for Life at no cost but then along came Obamacare which threw out that promise. As predicted, Obamacare has done great damage to this country.
