Call a Convention of the States to Limit the Scope, Power and Jurisdiction of the Federal Government

Agree totally with your sentiment but just a terminology note; Article V of our Constitution refers to a “Convention for proposing Amendments.” It is important to distinguish it from a “Constitutional Convention” since that is a term is most often used for describing a Convention of the States that has a much broader purpose than just amending our US Constitution that was written in 1787. If you accept and understand that distinction in the meaning of the terms used, COS Action is NOT calling for a Constitutional Convention.

Others have made all of the salient arguments in favor of an Article V COS. After being a part of this movement for the last 10 years, my biggest dream is to see the faces of our federally elected officials and bureaucrats watching this play out right in front of them as they watch their power dwindle…and they can’t do a thing about it!

My only question is, once a Convention is called, are there boundaries preventing the rewrite of other Articles once it is opened? I don’t recall this happening in history, and my concern is that the Convention will be hijacked, and the Articles we already have will be adjusted, modified, or eliminated. What guarantees exist to prevent such an occurrence and hijacking? We don’t have a precedent because it has never occurred other than the original Constitutional Convention. My concern is, once Pandora’s Box is opened, can we close it without damaging the Original? Considering what we have experienced recently (disregarding the rule of law, circumventing the Constitution, lawfare, etc.), we need severe guardrails. We also need to determine who represents our states at the Article V Convention and not necessarily those currently in office.

Constitutional Convention should really be reserved for describing a convention where a whole new constitution. The Constitution states a minimum number of days Congress must be in session. I think adding a maximum number of days is in order, forcing them back to their districts, where their constituents would have easier access to them.

Constitutional Convention should really only be used to refer to a convention for writing a whole new constitution. An Article V convention of the states is the best way to propose amendments to the Constitution that would restore order and restrain the tyrannical Federal government that we now endure. Those presently in Congress are not going to do anything to propose limits restricting their own power. It is up to We the People, acting through our state legislatures, to get a minimum of 34 states to pass a resolution requiring Congress to call the Convention of States. To date, 19 states have passed such a resolution. Only 15 more states are needed to join the movement. Any amendments proposed at the convention will require 38 states to ratify, so the prospect of a runaway convention is disinformation pushed by those who have the most to lose.

COS is envision by THE CONSTITUTION through Article V.
COS does not change the manner in which amendments to the constitution are ratified.
Article V simply adds the ability for the people of each state to request a national meeting to discuss, as citizens of the states, specific enumerated topics, craft the wording of a proposed amendment, and present that amendment for ratification by the Constitutionally Mandated margin like all of the previously ratified amendments.

Just like the 2nd Amendment protects individual ownership of weapons so that We The People can defend ourselves against an out of control Federal Government police force or military, Article V protects We The People against a Federal Government that usurps the domains of state and local governments, restricting or eliminating, by regulation not law, the protections of the Bill of Rights and the inalienable rights we fought for through the Declaration of Independence from a despotic King and Empire in 1776.

Congress will NEVER vote to reduce its own scope of power! We the People have to initiate that!!

The executive, legislative and judicial branches have been steadily undermining the American experiment almost since it began. It is time to STOP this so-called “progressivism” before it’s too late! Congress has proved itself nearly useless; the States are our last and best hope (after prayer, but action matters, too!)

The feds bulldoze through the Constitution granting themselves power not given by the Constitution. They act with “it doesn’t say we can’t” when it is actually “it doesn’t say you can!”

Disagree this is a bad idea. It will be hijacked

A way to limit the overreach of the federal government without expecting the federal government to initiate that limit themselves?? ––Brilliant.

Right on, Mark - It’s time we use the Article V to save our Country. The national debt is immoral!

The US federal debt just passed $35 trillion with $1 trillion in interest to service the debt. Washington DC has no intention of tightening it’s belt. Unless we take decisive action, our financial collapse is guaranteed. Convention of States is the only viable way to force our federal government to be fiscally responsible.

We need to shrink the size and scope of the Federal government and instill fiscal responsibility. COS does this, and I would hope we can bring the Federal government back to a government by and for the People. I believe we need to call a Convention of States and reign in this out of control bureaucracy known as the Federal government!

Yes! I wholeheartedly agree! The federal government has gotten way too big and needs to be downsized or straight up dismantled. We’ve progressed past the need for it.

Before signing up to support this initiative, I’d like to read the petition that the states are asked to sign requesting congress to call for a CoS.

The Devil is in the details. I’ve been an advocate for constitutional changes through this channel for decades, but rushing in willy nilly is a fool’s errand. In my opinion there needs to be series of conventions of states, each one focused on a single issue. The first should be to force congress to enact a balanced budget except in times of national emergency with that situation to be called by the POTUS and agreed to by a 2/3rds vote in each house of congress with votes on the record followed by an affirmative vote by 2/3rds of the states legislatures, all to occur withing 30 days or the call is voided. This amendment should also constrain both the White House and congress to a fixed schedule that does not allow for continuing resolutions. The first and only agenda item for congress each year should be the national budget without any other issues taken up or allowed to be submitted until it is done and signed by the POTUS.
