In early January 2022 when the crux of the mRNA gene therapy deaths and omicron emerged, a few (unethical) cases of xenotransplantation were authorized by the FDA on so called compassionate grounds. The concern is the evolution of human adapted pig pathogens like porcine CMV (similar to gain of function research) then causing pandemics. Canada agreed to a 'voluntary moratorium, but there is a need to ban this technology along with gain of function research across North America.
