Ban or Limit Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) Pharmaceutical Marketing

The US and New Zealand are the only countries in the world who allow pharmaceutical and drug companies to market directly to consumers.

I fully support non-traditional and non-medical treatments for many things, but I am aware that pharmaceutical drugs have a time and a place for consumers in this country. By limiting or banning DTC pharma marketing, we would be turning to doctors as the “experts” on drugs as opposed to patients coming into a doctor’s office and demanding drugs (SSRIs, GLP1, etc)… the doctor can decide the best drug for the patient.

However, I do agree with other folks on here who are calling for the ban of kickbacks to doctors from pharmaceutical companies - yes, that must occur to in order to reinstate faith in our medical system and medical professionals.

As a PCP, this is one of my husband’s biggest pet peeves. Patients come in demanding medication for something they don’t even have because of an ad they saw. If he determines it’s not needed, they get mad. It definitely makes it hard on doctors.

Direct-to-consumer marketing in the US costs over $1 billion per MONTH. That added cost and undue influence should never have been allowed.
