Instead of having the option of having an abortion, why not promote incentives for adoption.
“The Adoption Incentive” Program
Can you imagine, how the USA could change for one day, a single day only that no women had an abortion??
We have help for day care, we have help for welfare, food stamps, etc…
Why not a financial incentive to give your child up for adoption instead of aborting? Women and families need financial help especially in today’s world. I’m not talking about taking advantage of the program. One would need to qualify, just like any other assistance program.
This is what I had written when your post came as a match:
Provide the option for healthcare cost benefits to financially-burdened pregnant women who may be looking for an alternative to abortion, and facilitate the adoption process. Participation in this program would be completely voluntary.
Love the sound of this, but an addendum to help on the adoptive parent side.
Since the business of adoption is a lucrative one, causing lower to middle income families to either go broke trying to pay all the legal and red tape fees, or give up the hope of adopting. I would like to see the government offer to pay all or a large portion of those fees for those struggling to come up with tens of thousands of dollars to even be allowed to dream about creating a family.
Along with an incentive to the birth parent for adoption, open up the pool of approved and loving adoptive parents.
I have had women tell me that they couldn’t stand the thought of knowing they had a child out there somewhen that was adopted, but they would rather abort. It’s unbelievable and selfish. It would be wonderful if every life was given a chance at having an adoptive family give them a chance
I’ve spoken with a few women who have gone through with abortion because they were young and did not feel their life was in a stable place at the time of pregnancy.
10 or 20 years on they feel DEEP regret, because wisdom makes a person think of lost potential. That’s why I feel this is such a good idea, whether or not young women realize it or not.
Here are a few thoughts to separate this idea from “that Hulu show”:
Messaging must be clear that this is 100% voluntary
during and up to pregnancy (and perhaps even after), women can change their mind if they decide to keep the child. But in that scenario, they need to pay back either all or a portion of the cost the government incurred to do so, perhaps as a long-term loan.
reasonable income/net worth standards that are definitely above Medicaid standards, so that it is clear that this is a program geared lower to middle-income women.
I hope this one gets some attention, I’m finding that the social-media aspect of this site is letting some very good ideas get lost in the shuffle. From a macro-societal perspective this idea, if executed without corruption, does so much good for America.
In terms of financials, the cost of the program will eventually be recouped as the child grows to adulthood and pays taxes back into the system that allowed him or her their chance at a productive, happy life. It’s just good all around if done correctly.
