A line-item veto has been on the wish list for many for as long as I can remember. But I believe a strong President can implement one, especially as we are starting to move away from the stranglehold the new media has on information. This would also be a good use of a subcommittee of DOGE.
The President could let it be known to Congress that any spending bill that comes to his desk will be reviewed in its entirety. If there is any wasteful spending, earmarks, or any spending that is outside the scope of the bill he will make note of them, publish the findings on social media, and veto the bill.
He will also let them know that they have 3 options.
- Return the bill to his desk with the noted items removed.
- Have a roll call vote on the noted item. If the items pass the role call vote return the bill with those items intact, and if they do not return the bill with those items removed.
- Override his veto.
