The National School Lunch Program NSLP has strict policies for student nutrition. This forces all public school districts that want federal reimbursement to follow NSLP guidelines. These guidelines lead to poor quality foods that children don’t want to eat. This leads to child hunger.
If we had Universal Free breakfast and lunch with a higher reimbursement rate then school districts could buy higher quality food and have a higher participation at meal times. This would help kids concentrate in class, get better grades and have better focus.
With the government over stepping and requiring certain nutritional requirements at meal times, they should completely fund the program.
Parents are struggling with increasing costs and knowing their children will get healthy quality meals for free would be a huge help.
