The defensive value of the Marianas island chain, containing the U.S territories of Guam and the CNMI and a total population of around 250,000 souls, cannot be overstated. The sovereign will of the islands, as expressed in multiple elections, is for reunification and eventual statehood. Likewise, the residents of Puerto Rico have expressed similar sentiments concerning unity with the mainland.
It has been the tradition of the United States to admit states to the union in pairs; usually one from the political left and one from the right. Puerto Rico leans left; a unified Marianas would lean right. Statehood for both would strengthen our position in their respective geopolitical spheres and send strong messages to both our allies and our enemies that we do not have second class citizens.
As part and parcel of said compromise, I furthermore propose that the remaining territorial delegates be seated and be given special voting rights on matters which directly pertain to their territory or district, and that the question of D.C. statehood be permanently tabled forthwith.
