12 year limit- that’s 6 Congressional terms or 2 Senate terms
18 year limit- that’s 9 Congressional terms or 3 Senate terms.
Additionally, I would add that retirement is on scale with the military. At 20 years, a veteran gets 35% of his salary
I would also add that once a politician is out of office, they are ineligible to work for any PAC, or lobby, or other organization that deals with politicians. But that could be set up for a different amendment.
We have term limits already. The government imposing additional limits on the terms seems like overreach. If a state has an amazing Senator or Rep, they should be allowed to keep them for as long as they want them to serve. This is a voter apathy issue, not a legislative one.
Chris Murphy from CT 15 years ago told a town hall he was all for term limits and would not be a career politician, typical liar he just got re elected for 6 more years, I don’t believe he really won, no one likes him.
Repeal the 17th amendment and I fully support term limits! Also agree that whomever is voted in must be a permanent residence to that specific city and state.
I definitely think we need term limits for senators and representatives. People that have been in politics their whole life really don’t have a clue of what’s going on outside of their little bubble. We need to make sure we have people with new ideas that can help our country move forward.
I think that’s a great idea. We need to be able to act quickly when we find who has not been following the law or the Constitution. They do work for us We have the power Tell them they’re fired.
Whether you label it “Term Limits” or “A Limit of Terms” The people have been crying out for this forever! Whatever it takes to make this happen! Even if it means grandfathering in people currently in office so they will vote for it. They will eventually age out, and would at least make it better for our children’s sake. If we don’t pass this now, we may never pass it! The longer you are in the greater the possibility/probability of being bought, bribed, blackmailed, or simply hungry and greedy for power. If Presidents and other elected officials can have term limits, so can they! We the people demand it!
We need to Repeal the 17th Amendment as well. The reason the terms are so long is because originally the state legislative body would appoint the senators. The 17th Amendment made it popular vote. It needs to go back to the states.
This is a great idea. However, know that politicians have a different “interpretation” of this concept. I once worked for a Congressman who very smugly reminded me that, “we already have terms limits.” He was not wrong. A Senator’s term is restricted to six years then re-election and a member of the House to two years then re-election. They have “term limits”. What we REALLY mean to say with the “term limit” debate is a “limit of terms” a member can serve. For example, a Member of Congress (either the Senate or House) may be restricted to serving only 12 years. This would mean two six-year terms in the Senate, OR six two-year terms in the House, OR one six-year term in the Senate and three two-year terms in the House, etc. The bottom line is that a Member of Congress, whether Senator or Representative would be restricted to 12 years total. This would create a “limit of terms”. Now, having said that, the matter of Congressional staff must be addressed otherwise, Congressional staff would become very powerful unless they too are restricted. Let me explain. There are two types of Congressional Staff, “personal staff” and “professional staff”. Personal staff work directly for the elected Member and come and go with the election of the Member. Professional staff work for Congressional committees and are NOT elected. In some cases these staff members can work for a committee for decades. These professional staff members would amas a great deal of power if not restricted.
