I believe that Teachers and Professors should not be allowed to discuss their personal political beliefs/views with students. I believe that they should teach history, science, anatomy, etc as is. Teach the truth.
Force parents of children to attend classes as a Teacher’s “assistant”, in a similar method to jury duty. Kids will be happy they get to show off mom and dad for a day, they’ll learn how adults interact with other adults rather than learning how children interact with children, parents will be somewhat pissy about being forced to do so and thus will likely be more antagonistic towards the teachers without having the time to make friends with them.
In Ohio (at least) this is already a law. Not one that is followed, but it is law.
Dismantle the Department of Education and return the choices to the states. It is easier to control education from a state and local level. Stop common core as well. My mother was a teacher for over 30 years, the adoption of common core was a downfall to the schools and students.
Unfortunately, many families cannot afford to miss work even for one day… this is not an approach that is feasible for all. Volunteering is one thin, but mandating is another.
By mandating it you piss parents off, pissed off parents will be more combative with the teachers and thus more likely to watch them like a hawk
Well then will someone be paying the bills for single mom’s or families who simply cannot take time off work currently if they want to put food on the tables for their kids? I’m not one for handouts but you can’t force people to take time off work to sit in a classroom if they can’t afford to do so unless there is compensation for being forced off work.
Yes! These professions should be governed like federal employees by the Hatch Act or similar requirements. It is prohibited to express a partisan political affiliation while on duty.
I believe teachers should declare what their positions are, but they need to be mature enough to teach the merit of other political views, too.
if it is completely forbidden to them to utter what they believe, have faith in, and stand for, it will still distort their teaching.
better be open about it, so every one else can be aware what bias they might have, and correct accordingly.
similar to scientists who must declare possible conflicts of interest.
If this would pass, I would add that students should be made aware of what to look for as well. Some schools have orientation assemblies starting in middle school where something like the following could be said to them:
- " You have a right to your own opinion and we can’t make that opinion for you. Report any instances of teachers trying to force their opinions on you or another student to guidance staff or parents."
Something that would educate the students of their right to an opinion and also be a clear reminder to teachers to stop trying to make little political party supporters out of children who are inherently vulnerable to doing anything a teacher tells them to.
As for younger that middle school, I’m not sure it’s going to get through to them to try and explain it in a way they would understand and recognize the patterns of an adult trying to trick or force their political views onto their students. At that age, it’s a lot more, “the teacher is an adult and we listen to adults and do what they say because they are the trusted adult in charge of us.”
I would agree, and want to see this present practice stopped by those doing it.
Teachers should be teaching pupils HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Teach critical thinking principles and the illogical fallacies. Then pupils will see how they are being manipulated by the media and politicians.
This is an excellent idea! And an incentive for attending throughout the year as a class Mom. Parents who are assisting in their child’s classroom should be given the day off to contribute to their child’s education. Keeps teachers in check too!
