Also teach students basic legal skills ie. how to read and understand the terms of contracts, how to file for a homestead exemption, consumer laws etc.
What you mention is alive and well. However, these types of courses do need funding in all states. Some states are boosting money for this curriculum you mention but not all states.
This 100%
As a Christian, I would never send my child to the democrat run government schools, but if I had to, I would like to see more job training like this.
Could we also include the following; civics, economics, philosophy to include the Socratic methods, history over social studies?
Iāve talked to a couple 19 Yoās and was astounded at their answer. Asked them if they have a checkbook - No was the answer. I then asked if they know how to balance their bank account, or whatever card they use. They use ATM cards. Asked if they would know how to balance a checking account? No was the answer.
I asked if simple home economics, including bank account and finance management of your income is taught = NO.
I would love to work in a High School teaching simple economics and critical thinking, these are two major skills no longer taught in schools, instead theyād rather indoctrinate other nefarious things on the children.
Yes, this is such an easy change to be made. Iām not sure why they ever removed it.
How about teaching the Constitution in school?
Students need to learn to read paper maps, and write in cursive, start a fire, like many homeschoolers teach.
Teach kids how to count money! Many young people are cashiers and have no clue how much money to return unless the cash register tells them the amount.
Totally agree! I learned how to write a check in third grade and still write a few. At my last place of employment the younger ladies couldnāt even give the correct change! Our cash was off daily and not by cheating or stealing.
So very true!
I taught junior high school math and my seventh graders could barely add or subtract. Multiplication and division were foreign concepts! Their learning skills were very poor! In high school thereās more flexibility, but well educated youth need more good education! And when I was in the classroom we didnāt have all the nonsense subjects my daughter had in the 80ās.
My math skills saved my husbandās company several thousand dollars as I calculated in my head the size of pipe required. The next day they recalculated and discovered their error! Sometimes skills come in handy!
I love this idea, but its not the job of the federal government. This is a states right issue.
Iām a teacher and I absolutely agree with this. At least half the school week should be devoted to real skills: financial management, cooking, trades, gardening, fitness, etc. These skills are lost on most teenagers and children, and even many adults.
This will go great with my idea. I think we should all come together on this.
We have many classes in our district that teach life skills but they are all electives. IN THE VERY LEAST I feel that a personal finance course should be required!!!
As a millennial, I was never taught how to do any of the useful things in high school. Algebra and geometry is all good and everything but that doesnāt teach you how to balance a checkbook or fix a leaky faucet. ![]()
There would be challenges enforcing a federal requirement for the high school awareness class I recommend. However, I ask all legislators and leaders, of all levels, to determine the things they CAN do in order to effectuate these ideas as closely to the ideal as possible.
These exist in many middle and high schools today as electives.
