Add money education to that list.
Yes. Children should be learning, playing, arts, music, athletics, drama, ect.
I did too!
This is one of my peers and I largest complaints about school. Iām in college but having just finished going through my k-12 education its psychotic that I was taught about the holocaust 7 different times as entire subjects throughout the years but never once learned about how to pay taxes.
There is so much bloat education in our system that is repeated or unnecessary, meanwhile nobody taught us actual life skills in k-12 and I canāt imagine what it would be like if I didnāt have involved parents. Itās like they are actively setting up orphans and children with uninvolved parents to failing in society. I took a single health class that warned me about STDs, drug abuse, and pregnancy. But it was one semester and the only time the school attempted to teach me things that didnāt just relate to academia.
On top of that, as Iām progressing through college and meeting new roommates its becoming more and more clear how many young adults have no homemaking skills. Despite being 18-22 years old so many students have no clue how to (properly) do laundry, cooking, or cleaning. And this is all while living in dorms/shared apartments. I canāt imagine being the neighbors of some of my peers who donāt even wash dishes. Because if they canāt even do that I canāt imagine how poorly maintained their lawn will be or how much their future homes may be in disrepair.
Sorry for the side tangent but: washing machines have filters that need to be drained and cleaned periodically, door hinges need to be oiled or they squeak, distilled white vinegar is more effective and cheaper than many store solutions for specific tasks like mold removal and fabric softening, LED lightbulbs use way less power and last unbelievably longer, all electric handheld appliances like vacuums need to be periodically disassembled, cleaned, and oiled if you donāt want them to wear out and need frequent replacement.
I learned all of these basic tips on my own and not from my parents or school. It already terrifies me what else I may not be aware of and I canāt imagine how the kids without internet access are faring. We have become far to complacent relying on corporations to subsidize our knowledge with more products. Too many people donāt maintain their tools and simply buy new ones over and over because they donāt no any better. People buy a score of cleaning products instead of 2-5 basic chemicals for a tenth of the price. Unless we all get educated on homemaking skills we are just inviting corporations to scam us.
I agree, they need to know food does not come from the store. Need to learn how to grow it, education about farming and animals would help as well for basic survival or at least know of the topic. This would bring more respect of our environment as well as we can depend on ourselves more.
I see a lot of great ideas posted here. Many I also had. As a baby boomer I luckily had a better education than kids today and part of it was the fact that we had 7 classes a day, all through middle and high school. No study hall except senior year. 5 were your core classes and 2 were electives which is where all these great ideas would come in. Where I live students appear to only have 5 classes a day as they are out by 2, some as early as noon. These kids are NOT getting an education and we tax payers are getting ripped off.
Alongside this teach human anatomy and physiology in terms of biochemistry and cellular biology so everyone knows exactly the root cause for themselves and can understand how the human body works so people will understand for themselves the harm that the current food system causes and the extreme harm of the pharmaceutical products
This policy proposal is a āhome runā. We really need this sort of teaching in our school curriculum (another good reason to abolish the Dept. of Education for this massive oversight failure). Children spend most of their day at schools. Parents spend most of their day at work. How ELSE is this vital information going to be transferred from one generation to the next? This is an absolute must, if we are ever going to make America great again. We need great people. Look at todayās zombie teen-agers. This is the result of NOT having a policy like this in place. It speaks for itself.
Bucephalus! Yeah, I remembered that one off the top of my head, too.
When I went to high school, academic track students were penalized in their class standing if they took home ec or shop. I could really have used shop.
I did have chores growing up. I also had a much younger sibling I babysat frequently. So, I had exposure to many of the standard domestic chores. My husband didnāt. It was hysterical watching him after we first got married. But he has excellent visio-spatial skills and is very handy with mechanical fixes.
We were both a little weak on preparing whole foods. I could manage cans, boxes, and jars just fine. But steam asparagus? Nope. Thankfully, someone gifted us a Good Housekeeping cookbook for our wedding. We called it the How to Boil Water cookbook!
I love this! I was lucky enough to go to a school that offered budget and finance classes. Some of the best classes Iāve ever taken, and I remember the information more than I do anything I learned in any other class!
YES! My son is almost 16 and he doesnāt know how to sign his name other than print it. I told him we need to sit down and learn and he gets angry with me. LOL
CmpV007, yet another reason to abolish the Dept. of Education and turn over school education to the states. Over the past half-century, they earned an āFā.
Agreeā¦let them learn and create from each otherā¦change in perspectivesā¦
Betsy Rambo Hi! As we get older and have those responsibilities, we lose our innocence in a way that hardens our ability to think for the future. Children are respected in the tribe for the ideas, because they have not weathered those responsibilities. It is not about running the show, it is about how we communicate, and you have to know, FRESH IDEAS are necessary in order not to keep making the same mistakes. It is a cultural difference that I am speaking of. Of couse children canāt pay the bills, but what if we didnāt have any bills? Its a shift in thought that allows for EXPANSION in COMMUNICATION and RESPECT between GENERATIONS. : )
You manifested this! WOW! Thank You! Did you hear Biden apologize for the Boarding School Fiasco with the Native American Families? He did this just weeks before the election. It was so traumatizing to people. I read in the report after I saw this live, that many people called the suicide hotline, they had no idea this is what our American government did! I agree with you, and glad they closed this FED system DOWN! Empty Halls.
Actually, in Native American Spirituality, there is a BiSpirited that is respected because the vision of both the male and female. There is a Duality in Life of Man, the protector and the provider, and Woman, the Life Bearer and Nurturer. The men tend grounds and prepare for planting, the women plant the seeds and both harvest. The men provide the home and the woman take care of the home. Real DEFINED purpose. We have lost our strengths as a society because we have not respected our roles, they were not clearly defined. Many children grew up abused, confused and disrespect their own Gender. Then food and water with toxins effect our hormonal balance. We do not get enough sleep with EMFS, We have become confused and manipulated by outside sources. Too much violence, too much screen-time. We have forgotten we are Human. Too many are disembodied in their heads, and not embodied to their Beautiful Body. They feel shame and humiliation and believe me, WE ALL LOST THIS MAJOR ESSENCE of WHO WE ARE. It is going to take a lot of Healing and removal of these dangerous Energetics.
