Back on the day, a local police officer or sheriff would come into elementary school classes to teach about gun safety, as well as how to respect a firearm because of how dangerous they are. Having a similar program in todays schools could limit the amount of accidental injuries and deaths caused by firearms when people who don’t know how to use firearms, find themselves holding one.
It dawned on me the other day, that we teach sex ed for gays, transsexual, etc. Yet, gays/transsexual account for less than 5% of total population.
OTOH, somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of all homes in America have firearms. More than 25% of Americans SHOOT firearms. Yet, our schools are not just banning firearms from campus, but actually blocking education about them.
THIS is why America has a high incidence rate of our kids are being accidentally killed by firearms
I support teaching Sex ed, but we also need to restore education for firearms. I would suggest it either in PE (with Archery since both are connected ) or as an elective.
Firearms safety can be something that we as individuals teach at home , now I’m not saying this is a bad idea either seeing that the more understanding and knowledge of one has information on is a good thing. I’m honestly just wondering at what age do you think that they should start learning this in the school. As there should be an age of when someone feels its okay. See I feel that if I want my kid’s in the future to have knowledge about Firearms thier father or my self can teach them and explain stuff to them. If in schools would it start in 1st grade or 5th grade , in Jr high?
Teaching fire arms safety saves lives. We teach a wide range of vocation technology classes which use both blunt and sharp instruments which can be used to inflict harm to people. Teach weapons handling especially for those that may want to join military or the police force.
No country dare invade the US because we have lots of guns. Now imagine we teach people to use them properly,
We had Gun Safety in the school, but not during school.
It was provided / hosted by the local police department and some of the prominent town figures, and we learned to respect them.
We also took guns to school for show-and-tell, and no one thought anything of it. We had to ensure they weren’t loaded, and that was it.
Many also had rifles in open display in their vehicles in high school.
It always seemed so obvious to me.
If you were to drop a handgun into a classroom of 10 year-old children, and leave them to it…
Which would you feel safer with?
A classroom of children who had never seen, let alone touched one, who would be excited to have access to something forbidden?
Or a classroom of children who had been taught first-hand to handle them responsibly, and to respect the danger of mishandling them?
And while we’re at it, let’s bring back auto mechanics, wood working, house keeping, cooking, accounting and gardening classes. These are real world basic teachings that even adults fail to grasp.
