More and more companies are buying up all of the free farm land. Sooner than later there will be no farm land left for farmers to grow food to sustain their families or others. I know of one company alone that has bought more land than I can count. We must put a stop to this. Big companies have no business buying the land just to put more of the same useless buildings on it and create more waste. Give the land back to the hardworking Americans that want nothing but healthy, homegrown food for their friends, family, and others.
While I agree with your sentiment, I do not think it makes sense to ban any American citizen or company to purchase land or infringe on their right to make money. What I think we need is a better incentive structure for individual farmers to buy and/or work the land. The real goal here is to keep farm land being used for farms. For instance, federal funding programs are in place to incentivize solar and wind farms. If you drive through west Texas, you will see the results of this. If those same dollars were used to subsidize organic food, it would look a lot different. Obviously this is an oversimplification, but I hope you can see my point.
Commercial companies (most) will do what they can within the law to make money. Another reason theses farms are not profitable is due to how much food we actually import in this country. When was the last time you looked a where most of the produce in the grocery store comes from? Tariffs on imported goods could help our make our domestic farmers more competitive at the grocery store. This issue is complex and simply banning commercial companies from purchasing land will not solve the root issue, but it might remove some of our liberties.
I will say that I do agree that foreign companies should not be able to purchase farm land (or at least certain ones) as this could be a dangerous situation similar to how we do not want them owning our utility companies.
In summary, I do not think banning anyone from purchasing property is going to solve the main issue here. We need to incentivize farm land to be used for farming regardless of who owns the land.
