As a 30 year veteran teacher, who is National Board Certified, I have seen a lot of finacial corruption in our public school system. Public school funding must be transparent. There must be accountabilty for resources collected and how they are being used. Right now, in Washington State, it is impossible to obtain a clear or accurate accounting for these funds. We collect lottery money and pot sale revenues that are supposed to go to public education. The state puts these revenues into a general fund where it is impossible to track. Many states are doing the same. Millions of dollars are collected from taxpayers, but very little is actually seen in public schools. Students needs must come first. The current philosophy; students get what’s left over after the state and bloated districts get their cut. We need national reforms to hold states accountable to put students’ needs first and provide transparency for the use of federal and state funds.
