Something Needs to Change in California’s Approach to Prostitution

It’s disheartening to see what’s happening in our communities across California. In cities like Richmond, Oakland, and throughout the Bay Area and Los Angeles, prostitution isn’t just a hidden issue—it’s out in the open, and our neighborhoods are suffering. Our children see this day and night, with people walking the streets, often not clothed, and witnessing things they shouldn’t have to at such a young age.

What’s more disturbing is the violence tied to this—there have been multiple shootings involving prostitution and pimps, especially in Richmond. This isn’t just a nuisance; it’s dangerous, and the risks for those in our community are real. Families are living in constant fear, wondering if their streets are safe.

Despite these challenges, it feels like little has been done. Law enforcement, like the Richmond and Oakland PD, appear overwhelmed or unequipped to address the issue head-on. This isn’t just a local problem anymore—it’s widespread and affecting quality of life across California.

We need policies that prioritize safety, provide alternatives, and support our communities in finding real, effective solutions. It’s time we demand change and hold leaders accountable to ensure that California is a safe place for all of us, especially our children.
