Single Issue Bills for Congress

Yes I agree.

I suggest that #12 include the following requirement:
1. A disclosure identifying members who were presentand absent for the vote
2. How each member voted

The states should also be required to:

Constitutionality test for each bill prior to presentation and reading

Before voting on a new law.AI could help with this tremendously!

I would expand the length of bills to three pages maximum.

AGREED with single item bills and word limits on congressional bills.

I would like to add another requirement: 13. All bills must clearly define the problem it is solving by stating the What, When, Where, and Significance of the problem and then providing a complete evidenced-based causal analysis showing why the bill will prevent the problem from happening, and that it does not cause any there problems.

For the average American citizen, this would insure transparency and simply be a win for our country and her citizens. No more hidden agendas or items that have absolutely nothing to do with the title of the bill. Like a border protection bill that sends money to Ukraine. Seriously what does that have to do with our border? It would also make congress much more efficient. Most bills can’t get bipartisan support because of 1 or more attached pieces of pork unless pork for the other side is added. That just unnecessarily complicates already complicated legislation and it’s uncalled for. I would up the length. Saw someone say something along the lines of 1-5 pages per day said bill is released to members to read it before voting. So released 10 days prior would be 10-50 pages. Great idea.

I have said this FOR YEARS! As a village clerk I recently chastised the village board for copying/pasting an ordinance from another town, didn’t read it before passing then didn’t like what was in the ordinance. It was only 3 PAGES. Granted, congresspeople have staffs to help but no bill should be longer than a fiction book- readable in 1 day.

I agree with this bill. It has been sickening to witness the way that congress sneaks a million things into a bill. It’s almost like a bribe. If you want this 1 thing to pass, then all these non-related issues must pass.

Moreover, there should be an additional bill that requires members must read the bill and must be present in order to vote on a bill. It is horrendous that members of our legislature can vote on bills that they never even read and aren’t present for their votes.

I agree completely with this bill, it has been needed for many decades and it is about time our country returns to its true form of legislative government.

I agree with all of this except for the single page. Some items may need a few pages to lay out everything needed for that item. If there are page limits, it should be more along the lines of 3-4 pages.

Yes - what a bill actually does, is usually the opposite of what the title suggests. No more of this! The title should be clear and state the purpose of the bill.

Absolutely no more OMNIBUS bills .

I don’t see this going over well, generally common sense is not so common. This would basically just mean that when one party had the popular vote laws would be passed and repealed and passed and repealed.

Clearly, this would be a boon to transparent legislation

Sick to the one page. Less words are better comprehend. This is a superb idea. Thank you for sharing and allowing me to comment.

I believe anything over 5 pages is too long. My idea would be:

  • Page 1 - Executive Summary
  • Page 2,3,4 - Details
  • Page 5 - Sites, laws, footnotes, etc.

Yes, yes, and yes!

This definitely needs to be done. How often are good things scrapped because of something horrendous added, or the opposite happening. With this put into place, we’d get things we actually want and it would also help tremendously with spending.
