The majority of Americas public school children cannot read at grade level. When you break out subgroups like Black, Hispanic, Free and Reduced Lunch, Special Ed, the reading success rate is oftentimes in the single digits–it is absymal. Most of America’s pre-service educators are not taught the science of reading in their education schools and most public schools don’t adhere to it. As a mom of 2 dyslexic kids, I learned just what the Science of Reading means. ALL kids can learn to read but to achieve that, the Science of Reading needs to become a creed. Please someone on this site contact the Haskins Laboratory in New Haven, CT. Their passion is ‘The Science of the Spoken and Written Word’, they have decades of research and data. There are hundreds of other sources to follow up with regarding the Science of Reading, but I am personally familiar with the value of the Haskins Lab.
