Policy Recommendation: Veterans and Retired Law Enforcement as School Security Officers

Objective:
To implement a policy allowing U.S. veterans and retired law enforcement officers to serve as armed security personnel at schools, with a fair salary that does not affect their pensions, retirement, veterans’ benefits, or Social Security. This policy also mandates physical and mental evaluations to ensure suitability for the role.

Proposal Summary:
The increasing concern over school safety necessitates innovative solutions to protect students and staff. This policy recommends the creation of a program that allows U.S. veterans and retired law enforcement officers to serve as armed security personnel at schools, leveraging their specialized training and experience. The program would offer a fair salary and ensure that participants’ existing pensions, retirement, veterans’ benefits, or Social Security benefits remain unaffected. Additionally, all candidates must pass a series of physical and mental fitness evaluations to ensure they are capable of fulfilling the duties of a school security officer.

Key Components:

  1. Eligibility Criteria:

    • U.S. military veterans with honorable discharges and retired law enforcement officers who have served in good standing.
    • Must pass comprehensive background checks and be free of any serious criminal convictions.
    • Candidates must undergo physical and mental fitness evaluations designed to ensure they are capable of responding to high-pressure security situations and interacting appropriately with students, staff, and the school community.
  2. Salary and Benefits Protection:

    • Participants will be paid a competitive salary that is not counted against their pensions, retirement, veterans’ benefits, or Social Security benefits.
    • A salary cap and financial structure will be developed to ensure fair compensation without financial penalties.
    • Payment will be structured separately from their existing benefits and will follow state-specific guidelines to prevent income overlap that could reduce their existing entitlements.
  3. Training and Certification:

    • All security personnel must complete a school safety training program that includes threat assessment, conflict de-escalation, emergency response, and working with children and educators in an academic environment.
    • Regular re-certification and continuing education on school security best practices, student mental health awareness, and crisis management.
  4. Accountability and Monitoring:

    • Regular evaluations of physical fitness and mental health will be required, with mandatory re-assessments at intervals (e.g., every two years) to ensure ongoing capability.
    • Schools and district authorities will provide feedback on the performance of security personnel to ensure the highest standards of conduct are maintained.
    • A standardized reporting system will be established for security personnel to report incidents, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  5. Pilot Program and Evaluation:

    • A pilot program will be rolled out in select schools, with ongoing evaluation to monitor effectiveness, cost, and community reception.
    • Key performance metrics will include the reduction of security incidents, feedback from school administrators, and student/staff perceptions of safety.
    • Adjustments to salary structures and requirements will be made based on the results of the pilot program to ensure the program’s long-term sustainability and success.

Rationale:
Veterans and retired law enforcement officers possess valuable skills that can significantly enhance school security. By creating a program that taps into their experience while respecting their financial benefits, schools can have a well-trained, capable security presence without placing undue financial burdens on the individuals involved. Ensuring that all candidates meet physical and mental fitness requirements will maintain high standards and avoid risks.

Conclusion:
This policy offers a cost-effective, reliable solution to enhance school security by utilizing highly trained professionals. It provides veterans and retired law enforcement officers with a fulfilling new career while protecting their existing benefits. With proper safeguards, training, and evaluation, this program can create safer school environments across the United States.

YES! Was just thinking about this and how we need to lesson/stop the assault on 2A. Many of the attacks on 2A stem from school shootings because they trigger our emotions (rightfully so). Regardless if the Dept of Education does get irradicated under a Trump administration and Education goes back to the States, I think we need a Federal policy that ensures our children are protected while also helping prevent some of the anti-gun rhetoric.
