I think the only thing i would add is make adoption obtainable, cut the cost. We want women to carry their children to term, so they can be adopted, but so many people can’t afford to adopt. Don’t just make it more obtainable for the children with disabilities. Give more assistance to those who adopt a special needs child, but also we need to make sure these could have been aborted babies find loving parents
Thanks for your feedback, but I disagree with your last sentence. I am a working class single mother. Adoptive families tend to be solid middle class with a load of economic blessings/privilege that people like me only dream of. While it would certainly be nice to be able to cut adoption costs, I do not want pay any of these privileged middle and upper class families any of my taxes. Adoption is a privilege, not a right, and there are 2-3 year waiting lists for families seeking to adopt, for children of all races. There is absolutely no compelling need for our taxes to fund middle to upper class adoptive families. I would rather use whatever funding you wish to earmark and spend it on greater areas of need.
If a Dr does not want to do a life saving abortion then they should recommend a Dr who would. A Dr took a hypocratic oth. Even in the eyes of the Catholic Church, a measure taking to save the mothers life is OK.
I guess it deoends on your definition of middle class. My husband and I made decent money, but we couldn’t have afforded an adoption. Are you talking someone who make $40k, $80k, or over $100k as middle class. Many young people who still have student loans, wanting a house, because its cheaper then rent, but want to adopt, but can’t because of the cost. There are so many babies and children who need to be adopted, but not enough can adopted because of the cost. I would rather give anyone a break in cost on adopting a child, then have that child in and out of foster homes. Lets give the babies a chance, which means even entitled rich white couples.
Maybe middle class people can set up a charity fund to help fund each other’s adoptions.
There are almost no fees to have a foster child. In fact, foster parents are paid Cash Aid for each foster child.
“Entitled rich white couples” do not need this tax money more than people who are not “entitled rich white couples.”
Some incest unborn babies have multiple complications because of duplicate genetics and doctors can tell you that through any tests they run while you’re pregnant. Not to mention, it would really mess up a child when they grow older to find out they’re adopted and not wanted by the mother because they were a result of incestuous rape. I know we should give the child opportunity to make a decision to live. But at the same time, coming from an adopted child who’s been sa’d, I can say it’s a hard life. And it would be even harder to know what my birth mom went through. The child might end up committing suicide later on in life and that’s just terrible. So do we leave that decision up to the mom or the child at the end of the day? I honestly can’t make that decision. I think it’s morally subjective
Ok so I read every single word of this and while I agree to some of it, other parts are too lenient. Such as, if a 15 year old is pregnant they should be allowed freedom of bodily autonomy. I dont think 15 year olds should be able to make that decision. Adoption is an option. Also, the leniancy on women trying to illegally abort their unborn child is ridiculous. This would cause more illegal abortions to happen and most women are dying from illegal abortions right now because they don’t have the proper healthcare. Also leniency on doctors who illegally prescribe the abortion pill should not exist because they’re pushing big pharma on women and meanwhile killing them in the process. Doctors should be of the UPMOST liable for illegally aborting a baby because they’re supposed to actually care about the health of their patients.
- Unborn babies should have bodily autonomy, too though. (Your wording was a little bit unclear.) Also, this bill would not change the ability of states to expand or restrict access to abortion to 15 year olds.
- It’s not smart to prosecute women for illegal abortions performed by someone else, for a myriad of reasons: (1) If she gets complications, she will refuse care out of fear of prosecution and has a chance of dying. In fact, the two women who died in Georgia after taking abortion pills, delayed seeking care because of being falsely told that she would be prosecuted. (2) Because it’s not politically feasible to support the prosecution of women for abortions performed by someone else. We need to have a bill that will stick. (3) It feeds Democrat narratives. (4) Prosecuting women will prevent them from cooperating with investigations with illegal abortionists. The mere existence of her immunity alone, will make it less likely for someone to perform an illegal abortion, knowing that the mother could easily turn them in. (5) There’s a lot of “shoulds” in this world, isn’t there? Yes doctors should be held liable for illegal abortions, as well as for medical malpractice, but if the penalty is too high, or ineffective, such that it causes more harm than actually helping, it simply amounts to overkill and only feeds irrational fears and narratives about pro-life laws. (6) This law isn’t permanent; legislators can always make changes later if necessary.
Giving women rights to their body and rights to protect themselves is very important. There need to be more people talking about how we can help fix this problem on this website.
I agree that abortion is abortion in any form when done intentionally for convenience or to avoid the responsibilities of caring for an infant. Ectopic pregnancies are life threatening. I have a friend that almost died from one, so removing the fetus in this case is a legit medical reason to terminate the pregnancy. I like Ashley’s proposal because it’s many good steps in the right direction. I wish there would be no abortions at all, in an ideal world, but like she said, we need to work with what we got. If educational policies and programs can be implemented to educate youth on everything mentioned in the Teaching Lifeskills in Schools policies, abortion will become a thing of the past.
I appreciate the extensive research it appears you have put into this. I think this is very well written & I personally would like to echo the words of another user’s (@MrsMajesticAFx ) comment here:
“This is the most detailed one I’ve seen for the abortion issue with both pro life and pro choice in mind.”
While I don’t agree with everything written on every level, the whole proposition is rationally written & I believe that we as a nation need to come together more rather than seperate ourselves further.
Excellent post.
I have been involved in the prolife movement since the beginning, helping my motherwith the pro-life booth at the county fair in the mid to late 1970s. I have seen the movement go from primarily dorky Catholic housewives and their dorky daughters (hi!) to being largely populated by angry, grieving postabortive women who are upset that they were lied to and coerced.
Anyone who really is pro “choice” should support informed, noncoerced decisions. Women are lied to and told their babies are a “clump of cells”, that this will solve their problems. Boyfriends, parents, and even their ob-gyns try to convince her to abort.
People pretend that she will not suffer any side effects but postabortive women have physical, mental and spiritual effects that often last decades.
Women deserve the truth about abortion. Laws themselves will have some effect, but knowing the reality of prenatal development, physical risks will help women make decisions they won’t regret. The number of women who choose abortion will plummet when they know how far along their children are, and the ones who still choose abortion won’t die of sepsis.
Im not going to lie i never thought about the pain and suffering of the baby i just know its a life an innocent of anything so that it should be protected. And now that its c in my thoughts i will never be able to look at some of these people who have gotten them again in the same light.
Thanks for inviting me to this discussion. Good info and ideas but I do have some caveats.
Suggest changing:
Ban the criminalization against the maternal patient because of illegal abortions performed by the abortion doctor or taking an abortion pill illegally supplied to her.
To:
Ban the criminalization against the maternal patient that unknowingly obtained illegal abortions or taking abortion pills illegally provided by an abortion doctor.
Reason: If the mother knowingly participates in an illegal abortion, she should be held accountable to remove the incentive of getting the illegal procedures in the first place.
Your statement:
Limit the maximum amount of fines or sentences that states can order against abortion providers for illegal abortions. (Texas’ laws’ threat of lifetime imprisonment or a million dollar fines are simply overkill because they drive irrational fears among doctors & patients, feed narratives against pro-life laws and are simply unnecessary to enforce abortion bans.)
Response:
I only agree to a limit. Repeat transgressions should be addressed with increasingly harsh penalties. Big pharma accepts fines because they still make much more money overall. The only way to ultimately stop illegal abortions is to take away the incentive for doing so.
Your statement:
Fund the adoption legal fees for pre-screened families for babies with major disabilities (such as Down Syndrome). Give birthmothers a federal right to choose adoption for newborns & visitation rights in adoption agreements.
My response:
Disagree with “visitation rights in adoption agreements”. Once the birthmother gives the baby up to adoption, they should give up all their rights to that child permanently. A child nor the adoptive parents should establish a loving relationship only to be torn away by the birthmother years later. I also believe a birth mother should be able to choose to adoption electively. The birthmother may feel they cannot provide a good and stable environment for the child and feel letting a family adopt the child is in the best interest of the child.
Your statement was perhaps the below was included by accident because this is about senior citizens.
Commit to policies and regulations to help protect disabled and seniors from abuse and neglect. Fund and authorize increases in caregiver and nursing staff to patient/resident ratios in group homes, nursing homes and long term care facilities. Assign a social worker to check in with disabled and senior patients/residents and ensure they are connected with their best available options and resources. Allow Medi-Care to fund in-home caregiving in cases in which the patient qualified for nursing or long-term care.
I am pro choice and agree with you. Being pro choice doesn’t mean a person has to get an abortion. Nor does it mean they have to support late term elective abortions.
Our U.S. constitution states very clearly that anything not addressed in the constitution is to be decided by the states. Since abortion is NOT mentioned in the constitution it is up to the states NOT the federal govt to decide laws re: abortion. This is very clear in the constitution. I don’t care what “people on both sides of abortion issue” think, if they think it is a federal issue, they are wrong. It is up to the states to vote on and decide what to do about abortion. That is why the Supreme Court reversed their original decision about abortion, they had to in order to be compliant with constitution. When we begin to go against our constitution, we begin to lose America and we’ve been doing that for far too long. For those who are completely against all abortions: sorry, folks but that’s how our constitution works. I know this is of utmost importance to you but there it is.
The constitution states very clearly that anything not mentioned in it is to be decided by states not federal govt. Abortion and medical laws are not mentioned in it and therefore should be decided by states NOT federal govt.
We’ve been destroying our constitution for far too long, which is one reason why we are in the mess we currently are in re: U.S.A. Supreme Court has been a huge participant in not following our constitution. It’s why they had to reverse their original decision re: abortion.
Thank you Ashley for putting your heart & soul with your precious time into the welfare of mothers & babies.
Your abortion policy proposal is practical, deep insight & common-sense.

All great ideas. I would also add that maybe we need to get back to teaching abstinence at around 10 - 12 year old.
I agree. There are thousands of people who cannot have children and would jump at a chance to adopt these infants. We seem to do more regarding pet adoptions from animal shelters than we do for women and others affected by a decision to give up a child.
