Revamp the mental health and substance use systems!

As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, I see how broken the mental health and substance use systems are everyday.

Everyone should have access to the care they need to get better! We need to:

  1. Require all insurance companies (including Medicare) to provide coverage for mental health and substance use services.

  2. Combine the mental health and substance use systems so folks with co-occuring disorders can access care for both issues, concurrently (we need more dual diagnosis programs).

  3. Enhance insurance reimbursement rates to promote expansion and sustainability of treatment programs.

  4. Reimagine and reopen residential institutions to tackle the current problem of transinstitutionalisation.

Also we need to increase capacity - we don’t have enough beds in most states.
