Higher education funds are currently given to “elite” institutions (much of which is wasted). It seems at least 50% should be reallocated to providing “trade schools” BOOT CAMP style for the underprivileged segment of society. Perhaps 4 “centers” around the nation could be created. Student approvals should be based on family income ONLY. Training would be to fill shortfalls in our society, such as construction, plumbers, electricians, masons etc. Giving poor individuals a great start is critical.
I think your idea is good, but why limit it to low income families? There are plenty of people whose families may not qualify as low income, but do not possess the funds needed to attend a trade school. It should be open to anyone, but aid could be based on family income. We need trades people everywhere and as many as we can get.
I would add more tech schools than just 4. Make learning the trades accessible to people in every state.
Don’t agree.
- Boot Camp is a term used for something difficult that one has to endure.
- Only for “Under Privileged” is one more division.
How about just make it more accessible and open for all?
Sheesh.
Great idea. Others should also be able to learn skilled trades. For example dead-end jobs or just to learn new skill sets. Maybe… a 50:50 ratio.
I hear you! The idea is beautiful. We need more skilled tradesmen and women of all kinds.
Beware the law of unintended consequences. Why not just remove all that federal money from education in the first place? The money corrupted the relationship between students and the elite universities, allowing them to charge ever higher tuitions. We don’t want a repeat of that in the trades. What we want is a smaller government, doing less stuff, and staying out of our way, not picking winners. Easy government loans is what caused the rapid increase of student loan debt.
I agree 100% to reallocate funding from the elite universities and send to trade schools. BUT WHY are we giving taxpayer money to Harvard, Columbia & others when their endowments are so huge? I think these universities would be ok on their own.
