There is no longer any reason to have elected officials filter citizen desire, intelligence, and work. The communication infrastructure exists to eliminate non-“representative” government by elected officials.
The current national system was initiated over two hundred years ago when transportation and communication was minimal and most citizens were of limited education. That is no longer the case. Our progress is currently being limited by high priced marketing and media that does not serve the function of “representation” although it is what politicians depend on to decide what to do or not to do. They do not respond to nor implement most of what is directly asked of them. They are gate keepers, not representatives.
Online Citizen Legislation offers an improved participatory model of democracy. It is a great way to use modern technology and could eventually replace not only congress, but the many roles and officials of other branches of federal government as well.
Electronic text editing is universally available, fast, inexpensive, responsive, and available everywhere. Electronic document sharing is available everywhere. There is no reason to require people take part in expensive and largely undocumented processes to get elected officialdom to respond to citizens. Put decision- making on the internet, and let the people write the laws and vote on them.
