Repeal Telecommunications Act of 1996

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. This law changed regulations on various things regarding media. One of those things, was repealing certain limitations on the amount of media that could be owned by a single entity.

90% of American media in 1980 was owned by 50 companies. By 2011, 90% of media was only owned by 6 companies. Disney bought most assets of Fox in 2019, thereby owning even more media under one company.

We need to protect our country from media consolidation to allow for a free marketplace of news and ideas.

There is no free market when there’s no choice

Absolutely! A major rewrite of the '96 act is long overdue. It will require antitrust efforts and clear language that government may not collude with media.

Beyond that, perhaps a medium-term tax break for small journalistic outfits could help heal some of the damage done? This could get a little sticky in execution, but I like the spirit of the idea.
