Repeal Medicaid Estate Recovery - Stop government from putting liens on dead people’s homes

Currently, medicaid programs must seek recovery for the costs of nursing home services, home and community-based services, and certain related services if the recipient was 55 years or older when the services were provided. This targets the homes of middle class families should a home owner ever fall ill and need care in old age. A family that owns their own home, will not be able to pass their home down to their children if they ever need caregiver services because the government will put a lien on their home.

This is the only public welfare program that does this. Someone who is on welfare all their lives and never bought a home can receive the caregiver benefit without repercussions but someone who has worked all their lives and paid taxes , are punished if they ever need the service when they become to old to work. It punishes the middle class.

This needs to be repealed.

I completely agree.
Generational wealth was once a big deal in the United States.
It seems they make it harder every year to be able to hand off your wealth to your kids.
No death taxes either.

Currently going through this. My husbands grandfather has dementia and we had to place him in a nursing home after his grandmother just passed away. He owns his home outright. It has been in the family for 3 generations and we have to prepare for the state to take it when he passes,
