Reform the information classification process and standards

Many government documents end up being classified and redacted as a means of providing cover to existing agencies or government actors. A lot of information is classified when it need not be, or beyond the timeframe in which it needs to be kept secret.

Reforms should be made to keep information from being classified that need not be. Add natural expiration dates for information where applicable. Streamline and prevent the slow-walking of responses to FOIA requests. Stronger enforcement of and punishment for using non-approved or unregistered communication methods meant to skirt existing transparency laws.

Classification of information should not be used as a method to hide illegitimate or insidious behavior of our government from public scrutiny and accountability.
