Nonprofit hospitals file Community Benefit reports to list endeavors to help communities. This allows them to remain tax exempt. The problem is that these activities are programmatic, not systemic. They are one-off programs that do not move the needle to drive better community health. Re-define community benefit as social responsibility, specifically meaning funds used to develop sustainable cross-sector collaboration within communities to improve the real drivers of health problems. Define health as wellness, not the absence of disease.
Redefine Hospital Community Benefit Reporting, Redefine Health, Encourage Cross-Sector Collaboration
