Redesign what constitutes a legal protest.
Have we taught people how to protest? Some people have been advised to riot and burn the city so they will be heard. They need a map to change… or a “how-to protest guide” that creates change in a peaceful way. Instead of violence and rioting, the focus of a protest becomes being heard through civil and thoughtful suggestions for change.
Create a simple, standard agreement easily available to be implemented by protest organizer and local officials at the location of protest. Along with typical rules and expectations of peace, include in the agreement a requirement to “march to a solution”. Protesters would be expected to march with the purpose of reaching a specific destination. At this destination they will assemble into small groups. Protest participants will be focused on collaborating to produce possible solutions, ideas for alternative actions or recommendations of next steps in communicating their request. Support through premade templates can help guide users in creating solutions.
The results from this kind of protest would take priority over unorganized protests.
