Products with Sodium Benzoate must have a warning label on the front of the product them to indicate that this product worsens ADHD symptoms. For example, “WARNING: Sodium Benzoate worsens ADHD symptoms”.
A study of 473 college students found that those who consumed more sodium benzoate-rich beverages reported more ADHD symptoms. Students who scored higher on the ADHD screener reported drinking more sodium benzoate-rich beverages.
A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial found that children who drank a challenge drink containing sodium benzoate and artificial food additives were more hyperactive than those who drank a placebo.
Sodium benzoate can inhibit the activity of D-amino acid oxidase, an enzyme that affects attention and behavior.
