Take back Panama Canal if necessary. Don’t use force to acquire Greenland. Buying it? With what money? We are 40 trillion in debt. Let Greenlanders decide if they want independence from Denmark. Let them decide if they want to apply to join the United States. Taking on Greenland may protect the lower 48, but then we will be obliged to protect Greenland, which will become more of a target. It only removes and aggravates the problem. Sure, I’d like to have Greenland on board. But on their terms. Leave Canada alone. Leave Mexico alone. Let them solve their own problems. Use tariffs if they refuse to cooperate with protecting the border and let it suffice.
I do not believe you need to worry too much about Canada. Not only is it not likely to happen anyway (the acquisition will surely not occur peacefully, and Trump is not one to start a needless war), but acquiring Canada would actually be a massive blunder for Trump that would ruin America politically. Consider how the Canadian provinces, if they were to become states, would vote in our elections (and particularly, Ontario and Quebec). The country would likely experience a major leftward shift, likely ruining J.D. Vance’s chances for 2028. Trump was likely just trolling Trudeau.
As for Mexico, any military intervention should be limited to destroying the drug cartels.
I agree with you about Canada. And Trump’s trolling. And I agree with you about military intervention in Mexico. But he still needs to understand that taking Greenland by force is unacceptable, and the United States doesn’t have the money to buy Greenland. Nor does he personally have the money. It is important to let him know that we think this way.
It appears he has shifted tactics on Greenland and now intends to apply economic pressure to Denmark to relenquish its claim to Greenland. That, in and of itself, would result in Greenland becoming independent. I have also heard that Greenland’s own leader is willing to talk, but firmly believes the people there to be against becoming part of the United States. However, if this is indeed about national security, there are other options (e.g., forming an alliance with an independent Greenland that would include a U.S. base there).
This makes more sense to me. Thank you for bringing me up to date.
