I propose, in coordination with providing more choice in a wide open health insurance marketplace, that we offer the option to employers to give pre-tax dollars to their employees who then go and choose the best plan for them and their families from a broad pool of options. The current system where employees are made to choose from just a few options, if that, negotiated by employers often leaves many individuals and families wanting/needing more or different coverage and vast disparities in what people pay for identical coverage based off of nothing more than corporate purchasing power/negotiating ability (penalizing small businesses). Even the playing field a bit by putting choice in the hands of the employees. Also, there’s something very empowering in understanding the implications of variations in coverages and taking more responsibility for choosing the best options for yourself and your family.
