This bill proposes that from henceforth all members of congress cannot have a salary higher than the average income of their respective state.
I like the idea of putting a limit on the pay of congressman and senators but I don’t agree with the way you worded your post. Having the limit be the amount for each state isn’t practical because the cost of living in Washington DC is much higher than some of the states those representatives are from. Perhaps the limit should be based on something from the DC area or the area where congress is located if it moves. Perhaps take the working class people’s salaries from the same area as congress such as teachers, police and firefighters and say it can’t be higher than 2x higher than that average.
Our government is Public Service.
With the exception of POTUS, it is not entitled to monthly salary and benefits. Definitely not entitled to any Retirement benefits.
You should know without any doubt that there is corruption when average JQ Citizen leaves a Public Service position worth more $ than when they ran for that Public Service position.
Our Federal Legislative branch has 1 regular annual session, which MUST be attended, as well as a “ICE” potential for a “Special Session”. Which has a high threshold, aka Emergency Only!
The conundrum comes from there not being a standard number of Federal (or even State for that matter)“session days”.
The start Date for each new session of Congress is I believe, the first Monday of December.
Federal public service was only ever intended to COMPENSATE not be full time employment.
- Reimburse normal income lost while traveling from/to home state to D C and back while actually being In Session.
- Reimbursement of reasonable travel expenses.
- Reimbursement of reasonable lodging and food expenses while actually being In Session.
Accountability must be mandatory.
I agree! These are supposed to be people who are put in place to help the American people. We voted them in to help us! They should not be motivated to be elected for any financial reasons! The elected officials should receive the average salary in the state they reside.
This is why we shouldn’t have our elected officials live in Washington DC. It’s 2024, we have the tech to have them live stream their vote and select their votes. heck, they could work from home.
