This decision has allowed the media to make outright lies about any public figure (i.e. politicians, celebrities, etc.) without any consequence. Because proving “actual malice” is nearly impossible, public figures almost never sue for defamation.
It is time that the media be held accountable for the lies and misinformation they spread. The threat of winnable lawsuits by plaintiffs would keep the media honest.
