About 90% of Americans say they support organ donation but only about 60% are registered donors. The decision to donate your organs after passing away should always remain the decision of the individual. However, it is not something many Americans think about often. An opt out system would allow Americans to remain in control of what happens with their remains after passing away while increasing the amount donors available to those awaiting transplant. There is a major shortage of organs and many people wait years for a transplant, and many die while waiting or end up waiting so long that they become too sick to survive the surgery and end up being removed from the list. An opt out system, instead of the current opt in system could save many lives.
