No more tipping restaurants. They need to get paid better. It should not be up to Americans to pay them.
I definitely agree with this thought process. Much of the world’s restaurant industry pays their staff enough that tipping is not required. On top of that many restaurants are getting more out of this because much of their waiting staff does much more than just wait on tables. They are responsible for bussing tables, cleaning the front of house and other such things and the restaurant gets away with it because they give their employee the title of “waiter/waitress”. I used to manage a restaurant and it was super frustrating to see this go through. However as I was just a manager of it and not the corporate staff I had no say in the matter. This is another issue where restaurants have been banking massive profits for decades by paying super low wages. We see food costs rise but the wages of these workers does not rise… so I ask again as I did in another post… where is the money going?
We can’t outlaw tipping but we could require ALL businesses to pay minimum wage and eliminate tipping wage.
I’ve heard that oftentimes tipping can lead to making far more that would be paid by mere minimum wage.
Tips should be voluntary. If someone provides exceptional service, I’d be willing to tip. Many people expect a tip regardless of the professionalism or their attitude.
The problem is sometimes there is a tax on a server’s sales. I believe 8% of one’s sales are taxed on a federal level as well as state and local taxes on their sales.
Do away with taxes on tips.
Several fast food places have tip requests in crossville , TN. Staff in 3 of them told me they don’t get tips, the company donates it ( so they say). How do I know where it’s really going ? I may not approve of the charity ( getting credit for donating). Or does it go in their pocket? I called BOLI- blah blah, no results. Said maybe it was an IRS issue. So it went no where.
Seems like they’ve changed the definition of “tips”.
Why should I tip someone for doing their job, it should be service above and beyond.
I no longer leave tips unless I go to a nice restaurant and ask the waitperson if they get tips.
I know of some wait staff that can make upwards of $500 + for just a weekend. If we now make tips non-taxable, this will be unfair taxation. We should tax tips, and pay at least minimum federal wage. ps I worked my way through college waiting tables. So don’t come at me…
I think getting rid of tips is not a good idea. However getting rid of using it as wages is ridiculous. I also think when resturants require a generosity fee for parties of 4 or more or whatever is ridiculous. Tipping is based on your investment to the customers. Not a required act, they need to also do away with “shares” tips. As this promots bad service. Who’s going to give great service if their tips are now split among everyone there.
