Property ownership is impossible if you always have to pay to live there, even if your mortgage is paid off. We should eliminate property taxes on single family homes to help the middle class get ahead. In addition, property taxes kill family farms EVERY DAY because of low commodity prices, high input costs and cost of living. This would bolster rural economies and allow family farms to stay in business and not sell out to large corporations
I would refine the single family homes section of this post to, “No property taxes may be charged against a citizen’s primary residence.”
This would promote a gradual drift back to land autonomy, because corporate rent seekers will be put at a disadvantage.
I suppose one could follow a similar model for farmland; individual, family, or partnership owned farms untaxed, corporate-owned taxed.
