To help curb the cost of a university degree, students could go into a specific major without being forced to complete a bunch of other classes not related to a degree. My degree was in biochemistry, yet I was required to take Art History, Gender studies, etc. A degree could be completed in 2 years instead of 4, thus halving the cost of a degree. Perhaps the first year could include one or two very broad subjects but the remainder is focused on the specifics of you field of study. This is a practice that is done in many other countries. College should be a place of learning and not a place of indoctrination. No longer forcing students to take general education classes would limit exposure to classes that are outside thier area of focus.
