I appreciate the recommendations within your post. However, a complete ban against foreign ownership of American property has the potential to disincentivize investment by foreign countries into the American economy. I believe that a slightly modified approach, one which aligns with your recommendations against foreign ownership of mineral wealth, but which does allow a mechanism for partial ownership of American property would be more beneficial.
As such, the modifications that I would propose are, that ownership of land by a foreign entity would only be approved if:
The foreign entity entered into a corporate structure with an American citizen or already existing American corporation; and, that the jointly formed venture be under the jurisdiction of American courts.
The jointly formed venture must, at all times, be majority owned by the American partner.
Any endeavor utilizing the land purchased under the joint venture, must include the American entity first engaged to make the original land purchase: and the American partner must be the majority partner in any subsequent partnership.
No foreign owned entity, whether whole or in part, can own any mineral assets within the United States; and any mineral assets found or developed on a property owned by a joint venture would be owned wholly by the American partner.
Yes, the goal is to disincentivize foreign countries from “owning” or investing American soil. National boarders need to also keep out foreign billionaires and not just keep out unskilled laborers.
At a minimum we should have the same structure as Canada and Mexico to limit foreigners from driving up the real estate market with speculative investment.
Canada has a number of measures to limit foreign land purchasing, starting with a 25% tax on all real estate upon sale, all the way up to a current complete ban on foreign purchasing of residential property in high demand regions.
Mexico’s constitution bans the sale of real estate to non- us citizens 50km from any coastline and 60km from the boarders.
I live in a small rural town within 100mi of the Canadian border. 90% of the local farms surrounding us are owned by a Canadian billionaire. The robots harvest the blueberry crops and the farm produce to Canada for processing. They hire 1 American at $60k and the rest of the daily farm labor is from Central America.
This isn’t allowing investment in America, this is taking our land, produce and profit.
We need to “correct” the real estate market to 1940’s levels by only allowing resident citizens ownership.
